OPIC Unveils Cause & Honourary Chair for 8th Annual Hog Jog

November 26, 2012 – (STRATFORD, ON) The Ontario Pork Industry Council (OPIC) is pleased to announce that all pledges from the 2013 Hog Jog will be going to Victim Services of Perth County. Funds raised will help expand a few of the Victim Services programs including the purchase of “Eyez on” Emergency GPS tracking units which offers monitored panic alarms for high risk individuals and to develop transportation options for clients to access community resources.

This contribution to Victim Services, will be made in honour of Janet O’Rourke. Janet and her husband Kevin are full partners in O’Rourke Pork Farms Ltd in Dublin, Ontario. Following the death of a 25 year old employee who was very much part of the family, Janet reached out to Victim Services for support of her young family. Appreciating what Victim Services does, she joined the Board a few months later.

Victim Services of Perth County is a volunteer organization dedicated to providing short term emotional support, practical assistance and community referral to victims of crime and tragic circumstance in partnership with community and emergency services. The Hog Jog has raised over $200,000 for seven very worthy local causes over the past seven years. Past causes were the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario, The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s AED program, The Alzheimer Society of Perth County, The Lung Association Asthma Awareness program, the Emergency Department of the Stratford General Hospital, National Service Dogs training Centre and ONE CARE Meals on Wheels program.

OPIC’s Pork for a Cause Hog Jog is a 3.5km run/walk and 10km run held each year during the Ontario Pork Congress. The goal of the Hog Jog is to raise awareness about an important local cause, give back to the community, and celebrate the people of the pork industry. It is also about having fun! We have had great fun over the past 7 years. Participation has increased to 450 walkers and runners and race records have been set and broken.

The 8th annual charity run/walk and pork dinner will be held the evening of Wednesday, June 19th at the Stratford Rotary Complex. This is a family fun event for runners of all ages.
